Puppy discipline – should you punish a puppy?
Puppy discipline doesn’t mean puppy punishment. There’s a difference among the two and it’s essential that you know what that difference is.
I know you don’t want your puppy to be frightened of you or to find you scary. But if you choose to punish your puppy that is incisively what will occur. Hitting a puppy, even a smack, will cause your pet to not only feel pain, but also to develop a wariness – even a fear – of you!
The dictionary defines “discipline” as:
Punishment.
Instruction.
A puppy is too young to understand the conception that punishment means you disapprove of his activenesses. But a puppy is not too young to be instructed!
Let’s say your puppy chews one of your shoes. If you smack him, he will in all likelihood stop chewing, but now he is frightened of you. He cannot figure out that your punishment is a direct result of him chewing on a shoe. Instead, he will find you unpredictable and will initiate wondering if, and when, you will hit him again.
Yelling or shouting at a young puppy is no better. If he is shocked or startled by your deafening voice he won’t understand it’s because you disapprove of a lot of particular activity he has taken. Your angry voice will plainly scare him.
Bottom line: punishment will make your puppy frightened of you. This fear will breed distrust. All he will know is that you are frightening and, as he grows up and matures, he’ll find it difficult to warm up to you. You may never have a good kinship with your pet.
As you know, dissimilar dogs have dissimilar personalities. A lot of dogs will respond to punishment with a discomfited attitude. While your punishment may stop him doing a lot of particular thing — and he may at long last learn to obey out of fear — he will never have confidence in you.
Other dogs are stubborn by nature. If they feel threatened by you they may elect to challenge you for the role of leadership in your kinship. Since dogs are pack animals, every pack have to have a leader — or alpha dog.
If your puppy has this mentality, he will grow up always challenging you for the role of pack leader. When this happens, you are in for a lot of severe discipline problems, my friend. Very severe discipline problems in truth.

Imagine having a dog that is gentle, obedient and loving. A dog that is calm and never humiliates you, annoys you, or frightens your friends. You will only have this type of dog if the discipline you give him is education and not punishment.
Now it’s genuine that it takes no training to punish a dog. But instruction is a dissimilar thing.
